The chain sharpener Franzen SA6 Stihl Special – Sharpens automatically
All types of saw chains more precisely, consistently and quickly such as:
- 1/4″; .325″; 3/8″; 3/8″ picco to .404″
- STIHL Hexa chains
It also sharpens sawmill- and special chains with additional attachments such as:
- chipper chains with 15mm and 20mm pitch
- scratcher chains (also carbide tipped!)
- HOLTEC-Skip chains (also carbide tipped!)
- 3/4″ chains
- Mafell ZSX chains
All the necessary movements (feed, pivoting, grinding, etc.) for a satisfying experience are accomplished by the Franzen SA6. There is no surveilance necessary at any point of the process. By a threefold scanner head the machine detects right and/or left teeth. Should there be several right or left teeth in a row, the machine will still operate correctly (no interruption of the process). In case a tooth is missing, the machine automatically shuts down to avoid any damage to the chain. Always the last transported tooth will be sharpened before shutdown.

An example you might know from your daily work
Your shop is at the brink of its capacity limit during every years gardening- and forestry season. But you cannot just focus on repairing equipment for example, as customers will still step by your store, no matter how much work you have. Let´s take one customer who wants three chain saw chains sharpened. As you have a ton of work to finish you kindly ask your customer to step by the next day to pick up the chains. The customers does not really like that idea and wants his chains done right away. We all know that the “customer is King”, so you set your work aside and sharpen the chains, despite the fact that this will only cost you time.
Of course the chains are in bad shape and the rakers (depth gauge) need some treatment too, so you will have to run the chains at least twice each, which means 8-10 minutes per chain easily. So overall, you will loose roughly 30 minutes for three chains.

- Once the operator is comfortable with the machine, the setup can be done in less than one minute. Usually 30 seconds is all that is needed.
- Yes. During the same sharpening cycle, both cutters and rakers are sharpened. The Franzen SA6 also detects missing or damaged cutters and adjusts the sharpening cycle accordingly.
- Straight out of the box, the machine is capable of sharpening up to approximately 110 drive links). An additional attachment can be purchased to accommodate larger chains up to approximately 323 drive links.
The machine will do any pitch chain including ¼”, .325″ 3/8″ and .404.” With optional modules it can also do scratcher chains, chipper chains, Mafell chains and skip chains
- From 10° to 50° angles in 5° steps
- Yes, the sensor head is made up of three hardened steel pieces, so when the chain cutter is pushed, the head will read what side it’s on.
- The machine can be set to do the depth gauge in the same cycle, or you can skip the depth gauge cycle if desired.
The machine will have no problem with carbide chains; however you will have to install a Diamond wheel.
The Franzen machine runs off 230V/50 Hz (110V/60 Hz) and 6 bar (90 psi) air pressure from a compressor is needed

History of Franzen Maschinen
In 1895 Johannes I. found a forge. He invented the so called “Eifelhöhenpflug” (plough). These were sold until 1920.
In 1931 blacksmith Johannes II. continued the business. In 1947 Johannes III. enlarged the product range and produced trailers for agricultural businesses and shelf systems. After his death his son Johannes IV. took over the business, after successfully completing his engineering studies, in 1983. Encouraged by his studies he restructured the business. Already eight years after taking over he worked on a chain sharpener. Three patents followed. Today special-mechanical engineering is the main business of the company. Let´s see what Johannes V. has in mind…
