The History of Kubota: From an Osaka foundry to a global machinery brand
Kubota’s orange machinery is a familiar sight on farms, sports grounds and green spaces across the UK, but its story began more than 135 years ago, long before the arrival of its first tractor.
At GGM Group, we’re proud to have been part of that journey for 50 years, helping customers put Kubota machinery to work.
Where it all began
Founded by Gonshiro Kubota in Osaka, Japan, in 1890, the business initially manufactured metal castings. In 1893, it began producing cast-iron water pipes, helping develop the infrastructure needed to supply water to growing communities.
These early products established a theme that continues through Kubota’s work today: engineering practical solutions that support everyday life.
Moving into agricultural machinery
Kubota began producing engines for agricultural and industrial use in 1922, This engineering experience helped lay the foundations for its expansion into farming equipment, with cultivator production following in 1947.
A major milestone arrived in 1960, when Kubota developed and commercialised its first tractors. These machines marked the start of a business that would grow far beyond Japan, helping farmers mechanise tasks and improve productivity.
In 1972, the establishment of Kubota Tractor Corporation in the United States signalled a significant step in its international expansion.
Building a presence in the UK
Kubota’s growth brought its machinery to British customers, with Kubota (U.K.) Limited formed in 1979 and based in Thame, Oxfordshire.
Over the decades, its range has expanded to include agricultural tractors, ground care equipment and compact construction machinery. For grounds teams, contractors and landowners, Kubota offers equipment supported by a network of specialist dealers.
GGM and Kubota: 50 years together
Our partnership with Kubota dates back to 1976, when our Managing Director, Chris Gibson’s father purchased the Ramsbottom business at Kirkham. Looking for machinery to help horticultural growers work in glasshouses, he recognised the potential of Kubota’s compact tractors.
The sale of our first Kubota B6000 began a relationship that celebrates its 50th anniversary in 2026. Today, that family connection continues into a third generation, with Chris’s sons, Thomas and Andrew, working in the business.
Supporting the next chapter
From its early foundry to today’s machinery range, Kubota’s history reflects a continuing focus on practical engineering.
At GGM, we bring that heritage together with knowledgeable advice, parts, servicing and operator training. With facilities in Colne, Haydock and Knottingley, we help customers across the North choose suitable equipment and keep it working.
